Mediation: The Way Forward, Perspectives from an International Lens
On Thursday the 16th of May 22, 2024, The ADGM Academy hosted an event titled “Mediation: The Way Forward, Perspectives from an International Lens” This event was organized by SOL International ltd.
Partner Zouhdi Yakan represented Law House on the panel, which was moderated by Sarah Malik, with fellow panelists: Aseel Zimmo; Rozana Al Tayyar; and Syed Muaz Shah.
The panelists explored the benefits of mediation, the critical education surrounding the process, and the unique value that a properly trained mediator brings.
The discussions also covered the success rates of mediation, the necessary awareness amongst lawyers and clients, and addressed the challenges and cultural nuances in the field.
Furthermore, the panelists thoughtfully explored topics such as the reluctance to appear weak versus having the difficult conversations, the integration of mediation into contracts, and its place within Islamic law..
Law House is looking forward to exploring the future of mediation in the region through a series of panel discussions and conferences that will pave the way for future generation of mediators and mediation seekers alike.

Law House is thrilled to announce the inclusion of our partner Zouhdi Yakan, LL.M. (ADR) on the Roster of Mediators of the Lebanese Arbitration & Mediation Center (LAMC).
Zouhdi, is an LL.M. graduate in Dispute Resolution from Pepperdine University, California, USA, and is a skilled mediator. He has mediated and co-mediated disputes at Santa Monica Small Claims Court and Van Nuys Superior Court in California, serving as a volunteer mediator with the California Academy for Mediation Professionals (CAMP) across various substantive areas. He has gained his mediation related experience from, among others, the leaders of JAMS and the American Institute of Mediation. Zouhdi has co-trained a 40-Hour Mediation Training organized by the American Bar Association (ABA) and Pepperdine University in Jordan.
Zouhdi is also a CEDR Accredited Mediator, is listed on the Roster of Mediators with Saudi Center for Commercial Arbitration (SCCA) and a member of the Mediation Hub MENA.
Zouhdi possesses vast experience in corporate and commercial law, banking and finance, and dispute resolution. He has extensive experience in the field of international arbitration in disputes involving international sales, banking, B.O.T. and construction (FIDIC).

ZOUHDI YAKAN, A SPEAKER AT THE SEOUL ADR FESTIVAL (SAF) 2023 IN THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA
Zouhdi Yakan, our partner and experienced ADR professional, was delighted to speak at the Seoul ADR Festival (SAF) 2023 in the Republic of Korea, particularly during the Yoon & Yang Seminar on “Emerging Technology and Market in International ADR”.
His topic “Recent Developments of ADR in the UAE” focused on the latest developments in ADR related legislations, regulations and arbitral institutions in the UAE, including the latest trends in the use of technology in arbitral proceedings.
Zouhdi provided a brief insight into the UAE Federal Arbitration Law of 2018, its latest amendments of 2023, the ADGM Arbitration Regulations 2015 as amended in 2020, and the DIFC Arbitration Law 2008 as amended in 2013. He conducted a targeted comparison with the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration, highlighting where the aforementioned laws align with and differ from the Model Law.
He has also shed light on the latest Arbitration Rules of 2022 of the Dubai International Arbitration Center (DIAC) and the DIAC Mediation Rules of 2023 by comparing certain provisions with those of other regional and international arbitral institutions.
Additionally, Zouhdi addressed the UAE Mediation Law of 2021, along with the roles of the Mediation and Conciliation Centers in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the Center for Amicable Settlement of Disputes in the Emirate of Dubai.

Forum on Investment Environment & Opportunities in the UAE and KSA
Our partner Zouhdi Yakan was honored to participate as speaker in the “Forum on Investment Environment & Opportunities in the UAE and KSA”, hosted by Korea International Trade Association(KITA) jointly with Yoon & Yang LLC, Korea-Arab Society, UAE Embassy in Seoul, and Saudi Arabia Embassy in Seoul.
The forum which took place on March 21, 2023 in #Seoul, featured speakers from the Republic of Korea, UAE and Saudi Arabia. It was a splendid opportunity to have such a diverse group of entrepreneurs together.
Through a concise yet lucid presentation, Zouhdi provided an overview on the vital and relevant legislations in the UAE which have enabled it to become a leading international hub for business.
